What Is IV Sedation?

IV sedation, or intravenous conscious sedation, is a technique that uses medication delivered through a vein to help you relax deeply during dental treatment. You remain conscious but in a calm, drowsy state.

Most patients describe feeling as if they slept through the procedure and have little or no memory of it afterwards. This makes it ideal for anxious patients or those undergoing lengthy treatments.

Unlike general anaesthesia, you breathe on your own and can respond to instructions. A qualified sedationist administers the medication and monitors you throughout the procedure.

IV sedation is ideal for:

  • Dental anxiety or phobia
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Long or complex procedures
  • Previous traumatic dental experiences

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IV sedation?
IV sedation involves administering sedative medication through a vein in your arm. You will feel deeply relaxed and drowsy, and most patients have little or no memory of the procedure. You remain conscious but in a twilight state.
Is IV sedation safe?
Yes, when administered by qualified professionals. We use a dedicated sedationist who monitors you throughout the procedure. Your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are continuously monitored.
How much does IV sedation cost?
IV sedation costs £500 per hour at our clinic. Most implant procedures require 1-2 hours of sedation. The cost is in addition to the treatment itself.
How quickly can I get a sedation appointment?
We can typically arrange IV sedation within 14 days of your request. For urgent cases, we may be able to accommodate sooner.
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
IV sedation is not the same as general anaesthesia. You will be in a deeply relaxed state but not fully unconscious. Most patients feel they slept through the procedure and remember very little.
What happens after IV sedation?
You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours. You cannot drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for the rest of the day. Full effects wear off within 24 hours.
Can I eat before IV sedation?
You should not eat for 6 hours before your appointment and avoid liquids for 2 hours before. Specific instructions will be provided at your consultation.
Who is IV sedation suitable for?
IV sedation is ideal for patients with dental anxiety, strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, or those having lengthy procedures. A pre-sedation assessment ensures you are a suitable candidate.
